Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Read on Vacation

Long ago, I was a book blogger. Every single week I’d write lengthy posts about what I was reading, which books made it onto my TBR list, my favorite books, and literally anything bookish I could think of to write. I miss that blog!

One of my regular blog features was responses to Top Ten Tuesday posts (that were hosted at The Broke and the Bookish at the time and are now hosted at That Artsy Reader Girl), and as my love of reading has never ceased, I’m going to start writing those again. I might even go back and write out responses to old prompts, too.

Top Ten Tuesday - Books I Read on Vacation (Oct 11)

While I love a relaxing beach vacation (and beach read), my favorite vacations are the ones that wear me out. I long to walk through cities I've never visited, exploring museums and cafes and local shops. I want to hike through forests, cross shaky bridges in jungles, and go on adventures I can't possibly do back home.

That said, there’s always down time when on vacation, and those are the prime time moments in which I can crack open a good book and get reading. I don’t often finish a full book while on vacation, but a few chapters here and there still counts for something.

1. Pirate Hunters by Robert Kurson

I read this while flying to California with my family, in between helping with snacks, coloring books, and other activities for my kids. I didn’t finish the book, but I read as many chapters as I could.

2. Wolves and Daggers by Melanie Karsak

I read this while relaxing at a lake house.

Every single book I read by Melanie Karsak is such a fun adventure, and I've really fallen in love with the steampunk world she created for this Steampunk Red Riding Hood series.

3. You Can't Touch My Hair by Phoebe Robinson

I read this book while staying in a woodsy cabin in Arkansas.

2 Dope Queens was my favorite podcast for years, and so when Phoebe Robinson's book came out, I had to read it.

4. The Chaos of Standing Still by Jessica Brody

On a road trip, this was my book of choice. I can't read much in the car without becoming motion sick, but I remember wanting so badly to not have to close the book.

This novel was one of those special books that felt like it was written just for me, and quickly ended up on the list of my favorite books of all time.

5. The Truth About Twinkie Pie by Kat Yeh

This was such a fantastic middle grade book. I remember devouring it while in a hotel for the evening.

6. Boneshaker by Cherie Priest

Love Cherie Priest books!

I read this during one of my many cabin trips, somewhere in the woods.

7. The Mysterious Howling by Maryrose Wood

I listened to the audiobook version of this novel in the car on a road trip and it quickly became my favorite book of that year (2015!).

Note to self: I need to go back and read the others in this series.

8. The Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut

I love this book! I read this one during a family vacation long, long ago. It was probably a camping trip?

9. Layla by Colleen Hoover

While this novel didn't have the staying power of Verity for me, it was a wild read. I recall reading it in a cabin, rain cascading down the windows and tea in hand.

10. Not My Father's Son by Alan Cumming

This deep, heartbreaking, and emotional memoir was an audiobook I listened to during a short road trip to a small town a few hours from where I live.

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week offers a new bookish blogging prompt and anyone is welcome to participate. Visit her website to learn more.
